Auto Align & Nesting

Auto Align and Nesting for Garment Design in Illustrator

CamiForge automatically aligns and nests garment pattern pieces onto fabric roll layouts inside Adobe Illustrator — no manual dragging, no wasted fabric, no re-checking every gap by hand.

What Is Auto Align and Nesting for Garment Design?

Auto align and nesting — also called automatic marker making — is the process of packing garment pattern pieces onto a fabric roll so that as little material as possible is wasted between them. In a manual Illustrator workflow, a designer drags each front, back, sleeve, and collar panel into position by eye, checks the gaps, rotates pieces, and repeats the whole exercise every time the size run or roster changes.

CamiForge automates that entire step. After your garment variations have been generated, the Finalize stage collects every pattern piece in the document, computes an optimal roll layout, and then repositions and rotates each piece inside Adobe Illustrator to match — producing a cutting-ready file in one run.

Capabilities

What the Nesting Engine Does

Every option below is available in the Finalize stage of CamiForge — the prepress and production finalizer.

Fabric Roll Artboards

Set your exact roll width in centimetres — 160, 180, 190 or any custom width — and CamiForge builds roll-sized artboards and packs the pieces into them.

Best Fit with Free Rotation

Best Fit mode ignores size and part grouping and freely rotates pieces, including 90 degrees, to pack the roll as tightly as the geometry allows.

Arrange by Size

Groups pieces by size then by part — all S fronts, then S backs, then S sleeves, then M — so cut piles stay sorted. Pieces are only mirrored at 0 or 180 degrees, never turned 90.

Cutting Margin Control

Set the blade or laser cutter margin between pieces in millimetres so the cutter always has clearance, without leaving more fabric on the floor than necessary.

Automatic 50 m Roll Partitioning

If a layout runs longer than 50 metres, CamiForge splits the remaining garments into additional _Part2.ai, _Part3.ai files automatically so every file stays stable to open and cut.

Nest in Place or Export

Nest into the active Illustrator document, or export standalone production-ready .ai files for sublimation printing and laser cutting.

Arrangement Modes

Least Fabric Waste, or Sorted Cut Piles

Two nesting strategies, because the cheapest layout and the fastest layout to cut are not always the same layout.

Best Fit

Least Fabric Waste

Treats every piece as one flat pool, disregards size and garment part, and rotates freely in 90 degree steps to close every gap it can. Use this when material cost dominates and your cutting team sorts downstream.

  • Free 90° rotation
  • Highest roll utilisation
  • Cut piles are unsorted

Arrange by Size

Sorted Production Flow

Walks the roll size by size and part by part, mirroring pieces at 0 or 180 degrees only. Grain direction is preserved and pieces come off the cutting table already grouped by garment size.

  • Mirrored only, never turned 90°
  • Grain direction preserved
  • Cut piles arrive pre-sorted
The Nesting Run

How Auto Nesting Runs in Illustrator

Four steps from a generated garment file to a cutting-ready roll layout.

1

Select the Generated Artwork

Open the Finalize stage and pick the .ai file CamiForge generated — or choose one of your recent generated artworks from the quick-pick list.

2

Set Roll Width and Cutting Margin

Enter your fabric roll width in centimetres and the piece margin in millimetres so the blade or laser always has clearance.

3

Choose Best Fit or Arrange by Size

Pick least-fabric-waste packing with free rotation, or size-sorted packing that keeps grain direction and cut piles in order.

4

Run and Collect Production Files

CamiForge computes the layout, repositions and rotates every piece in Illustrator, splits anything over 50 metres into additional part files, and hands you production-ready .ai output.

Who Uses Automatic Garment Nesting?

Any team that puts pattern pieces on a fabric roll before cutting.

Sublimation Printers

Pack full roll layouts for dye-sublimation transfer printing without hand-arranging every panel.

Laser Cutting Operations

Feed the cutter a nested file with a consistent blade margin between every piece.

Jersey & Sportswear Factories

Nest an entire team order — every player, every size — into one roll layout in a single run.

Cut & Sew Manufacturers

Reduce material cost per garment by improving roll utilisation on every production run.

Prepress Teams

Remove the manual alignment step that sits between design approval and the cutting room.

Custom Apparel Shops

Turn a small mixed-size order into a tight roll layout without spending an afternoon on it.

Auto Nesting Questions

Is there software that can auto align and nest garment designs in Illustrator?
Yes. CamiForge is a Windows application that drives Adobe Illustrator directly and automatically aligns and nests garment pattern pieces onto fabric roll artboards. You pick the generated garment file, set the fabric roll width and cutting margin, choose an arrangement mode, and CamiForge repositions and rotates every piece inside Illustrator for you.
How does auto nesting reduce fabric waste?
CamiForge offers a Best Fit mode that ignores size and garment part grouping and freely rotates pieces, including 90 degree turns, so it can pack the roll as tightly as possible. The packing algorithm evaluates the full pool of pieces rather than placing them in the order they were generated, which closes the gaps a manual layout usually leaves behind.
Can auto nesting keep my cut piles sorted by size?
Yes. Arrange by Size mode groups pieces by size and then by part — all S fronts, then S backs, then S sleeves, then M, and so on. In this mode pieces are only ever mirrored at 0 or 180 degrees and never turned 90 degrees, so grain direction is preserved and cut piles come off the table already sorted.
What happens if the nested layout is longer than the fabric roll?
CamiForge automatically partitions the layout. If the nested height exceeds 50 metres, the remaining garments are split into additional production files named _Part2.ai, _Part3.ai and so on, so each file stays stable enough for Illustrator to open and for the cutter to process.
What fabric roll widths does CamiForge support?
Any roll width between roughly 10 cm and 500 cm. Standard sublimation roll widths such as 160 cm, 180 cm, and 190 cm are typical, and you can also set the blade or cutting margin between pieces in millimetres.
